One Country Statement on April 2024 Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, One Country Project issued the following statement after the release of the April jobs report:

“April has marked the 40th month of job growth under President Biden’s administration, with an addition of 175,000 jobs to the market. This is welcome news during National Small Business Week – small businesses, which comprise 84.8 percent of establishments in rural regions, create 54.3 percent of jobs for rural Americans. To continue supporting rural small businesses, Congress must set them, their employees, and their communities up for success.

“Beyond bolstering main street, agriculture and the Farm Bill is critical for rural America’s well-being. After months of delay, Congress released drafts of the Farm Bill. However, House Republicans’ draft would cut $30 billion of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding over the next decade – making it more difficult for hardworking Americans to put nutritious food on their families’ tables. A Farm Bill that works for rural America must garner bipartisan support for what workers need, including critical food assistance that keeps Americans fed and afloat when facing financial difficulties – and provides an on-ramp to future success.”
